Callout to ‘kid’ stranded at Grey Mare’s Tail
Sun, 16th Mar 2025
At 17:12 on Saturday 15th March Police Scotland asked for the assistance of Moffat Mountain Rescue Team to attend the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall near Moffat.
It was reported that a young goat who had become separated from its mother seemed to be stuck on a ledge causing concern for members of the public.
10 members of Moffat MRT attended the callout along with 2 team vehicles. An initial party of 3 team members ascended the tail path to assess the situation and determine whether a technical rescue was a feasible option whilst the rest of the team gathered the equipment required for such a rescue. The initial team were able to locate the goat and found it had managed to remove itself from the ledge and found a more suitable area from which to make its escape.
They then descended back down the hill and the team stood down.
Whilst not our standard type of rescue, concerns over members of the public attempting to assist in a dangerous area also factor in our decisions to attend and minimise risk to life.
