Criffel Rescue for an injured walker

Mon, 19th Feb 2024

At 13:32 on Monday 19th February 2024 Moffat Mountain Rescue Team was asked by Police Scotland to assist in the Rescue of an injured walked on Criffel near New Abbey.

The walker had slipped between the summits of Knockendoch and Criffel and sustained a suspected broken ankle. 11 team members from Moffat MRT responded to the Callout however, given the casualty’s location and the number of people required to carry out a safe evacuation, Galloway MRT were also asked to assist, providing an additional 10 team members.

The team, including a paramedic from Moffat MRT, proceeded up the hill to carry out a casualty initial assessment followed by additional team members carrying medical equipment, a casualty bag, stretcher, stretcher wheel and rope up to the casualty’s location.

Following assessment the casualty was given pain relief and their ankle supported in a vacuum splint. They were then packaged into a casualty bag and stretcher ready for evacuation.

The walker was safely carried from the hillside and their party walked off the hill where they were handed over to a waiting Scottish Ambulance Service crew to be conveyed to hospital for further assessment.

We wish them all the best in their recovery!
