Doug Scott- Crawling Down the Ogre -7 March 2018

Doug Scott CBE and that other icon of British mountaineering, Chris Bonington made the first ascent of The Ogre (7,285m) in July 1977. Their climb extended the boundaries of what had been achieved before at that altitude but the drama began with the subsequent descent from the summit in the dark. 

A catalogue of disasters that would have defeated most people turned the climb into an epic that has since entered mountaineering folklore and it was another 24 years before The Ogre was climbed again.

In his lecture Doug tells the thrilling story of hard climbing, team work and survival – against all the odds – in his famously laconic and humorous style. This lecture has been refreshed with the aid of newly discovered photographs and material from diaries from other members of the team – Chris Bonington, Nick Estcourt and Clive Rowland as well as reference to cine film and audio tapes discovered in an attic during the summer of 2017 and made by the late Mo Anthoine, the official photographer on the expedition. 

Proceeds from the talk will help support the work of Community Action Nepal and Doug will update the audience on CAN’s progress with post-Nepal Earthquake reconstruction of its projects. 

No talk by Doug would be complete without stalls selling Nepalese goods or an auction of framed mountaineering prints signed by famous mountaineers including Reinhold Messner, Chris Bonington and Stephen Venables to support the work of the charity. 

Doug will also be signing copies of his award-winning autobiography Up and About and his latest book, The Ogre – Biography of a mountain and the dramatic story of the first ascent.
