The Area We Cover / Where We Are

Moffat Mountain Rescue provides search and rescue cover for not only the Moffat area but our area of responsibility can lie as far north as Tinto in Lanarkshire (overlapping with the Strathclyde Police Scotland MRT), then Gretna and the English Border in the south, the Grey Mare’s Tail and Langholm in the East and Dumfries and Sanquhar in the West. This is an area of approximately 400 km2.

The Area

We cover a wide variety of historical and recreational areas including the Moffat hills with the Grey Mare’s tail and Loch Skene, the Lowther mineral-mining hills, Criffel outside Dumfries with views of the Lake District, and the biking trails of Ae and Mabie forests.

We cover the local main population areas of Dumfries, Moffat, Annan, Langholm, Sanquhar, Thornhill and Lockerbie and all the communities in between. Our work includes searching for members of these communities or visitors who are injured, missing, lost and/or vulnerable as well effecting their rescue.

We also assist these communities in resilience operations during poor weather such as flooding or severe winter weather, or assisting the local health board in reaching remote dwellings during such events. During extreme events, the Police may call us to assist motorists on our local roads or even the A74(M) motorway.

Surrounding areas

Every area of land in Great Britain is served by a Mountain or Search and Rescue Team, who may work collaboratively as needed during specific callouts or situations. We work closely with and train with our surrounding rescue teams, including the Galloway MRT, Tweed Valley MRT, Borders Search and Rescue Team, Strathclyde Police MRT, Nith Inshore Rescue, HM Coastguard, Scottish Cave Rescue Organisation and Penrith MRT
